Thinking AI will get you a job is a mistake
There is an AI boom, or should I say bubble? Artificial intelligence products are being developed left, right and centre. Every software company is throwing their all into AI products in the hope that their product will be the next big thing. And in recruitment, job hunting and employment support circles AI, like in most industries, is being pushed like it is going out of fashion.
What can AI do for your job search?
It can correct your CV and reword and format it to look more appealing. AI can automate your job search’s to save you time and effort. It can coach you for your interviews and prepare you without the need to seek a professional. Think of it like your own personal employment support person. With one problem…
Eventually you will have to jump some hurdles yourself to get a job. The interview itself, the induction, your own skills and experience etc. They are all things that you need to know. AI can get you to the door, but only you can walk through it. Therefore you can use AI to be efficient, smart and appear as appealing as you like, but if you are the end product and you are not good enough, then AI cannot fix that.
Should you use AI at all?
For me if you need to use AI to do things you should be able to do yourself then you are subbing out self improvement for delegation. Some will argue that this does not matter. However, if you need to write something, read something or follow some duties as part of your job and you keep subbing out opportunities to self improve that is a problem.
This does not mean you should not use AI, but instead use it where it is needed. A mundane productivity task is a wise use of AI. But when you allow it to do important tasks for you that to me is either plain lazy, risky or probably both.
Will AI be the future of how you get a job?
AI is a tool. And like any tool it will improve and be refined. But it will probably play some part in most hiring and job search processes in future but it likely will not take it all.
If you disagree, with the latter then here’s why I think that.
If AI can do the entire job search and hiring process itself, then it can probably end up doing the whole job itself. And if it goes to that level then there won’t be jobs for us to do. That is the scary scenario. Food for thought.
